Aside #4: Vietnamese Weddings

According to our tour guide on that Mekong Delta river tour, there are three seasons in Vietnam: the wet season, the dry season and wedding season. He wasn't joking. December is wedding season, so it was brides and grooms galore.

On our very first night, we caught this sight:

at a seafood restaurant across from our hotel...

all decked out - look at those colours!

We averaged one wedding per night. Then, at Miss Saigon, there was a full-fledged wedding dinner the night we were there. We were practically guests!

Speech, speech!

The balloons had more than a decorative function. As the opening ceremonies ended, the balloons were pulled up by some unseen elf on the balcony above, such that they burst in rapid succession, simulating the sound of firecrackers. How ingenious!

That night, we counted no less than six wedding parties. It was wedding season indeed, and not so different from Singaporean Chinese-style wedding dinners, eh?
